Comments and feedback welcomed for this documentary idea i've had....

http://people.tribe.net/le4life/blog/e52e5069-a312-4783-9577-1689cfc7eddb#comments

America's disproportionate reporting on white, attractive, female victims of crime has been a topic I've wanted to cover in a film for a few years now. Below is the mess of thoughts and observations I hope to someday put together into a cohesive documentary. Brutally honest feedback would be appreciated.

IF I WAS A GIRL
...I never would've even been born, literally. My parents really wanted a boy and tried three times unsuccessfully. After my three sisters, I was on the way, but due to China's anti-overpopulation policies, my parents weren't even supposed to be having any more children. My mom told me that the nurses let her slide because I turned out to be a boy. So Chinese attitudes (not now but back then) around boys versus girls make up the main reason I was conceived and delivered, and thus gender issues are sort of personal to me.

PROSTITUTION, THE WORLD'S OLDEST PROFESSION
In high school I developed an interest in the criminology and psychology of serial killers. A statistic that always stood out for me was the high percentage of victims being prostitutes. One reason street hookers make easy targets is because the illegality and stigma of their work prevents them from approaching police, reporters, and doctors like other victims. Furthermore, do law enforcers and the media treat serial murder cases with less urgency if they involve victims with unconventional lifestyles or jobs? And how is being a woman different in a country such as Amsterdam where sex work is regulated like any other business and where rates of rape, assault, and STD infections on prostitutes are much lower?

DRUGS
Decades ago, opium, cocaine, and marijuana became illegal because, according to the media, Chinese, black, and Mexican men - respectively - were using the substances to seduce or sexually assault white women. Protecting white females as a catalyst for drug prohibition persists to this day, in far more subtle ways. Before Bill Clinton left office, he signed an anti-GHB bill in honor of teenager Hillory Farias who had fell into a fatal coma after having drank something spiked with the depressant chemical. Had Farias not been white, could her overdose have sparked so much attention in the media and led to the criminalization of GHB?

Come to think of it, what is the rate of teenagers of color experiencing such tragedies around drug misuse or abuse? I certainly don't know because reporters don't bring it up. Following the news for my work with DanceSafe.org, every story I saw about anyone who became addicted to or overdosed on ecstasy had the same profile: a middle-class white kid whose life in school and home was perfect before drugs ruined everything. How these reports highlighted the kids goes to show that the definition of an all-American teenager is still a very narrow and false one. According to the media, you should be happy if you're white and on the football team and getting crowned at your prom.

YOUNG, PRETTY, AND ALL-AMERICAN
My sisters were discussing the discovery of Laci Peterson's body one evening and I asked who they were talking about. Sarah asked if I had been asleep the past year to not know about this girl. The reason was that I never watch television or follow the news except for work. I don't see the point in obsessing with such cases - as tragic as they are - because every story is the same. And this brings me to a few more questions:

1) What populations of American women are being ignored by the media?
2) Why does this happen from a news industry perspective?
3) Does more coverage equal better investigations of cases?

Is the focus on the all-American damsel in distress promoting a certain idea of what girls are or should be? Firstly, reporters eulogize each victim as a successful student, loving housewife, or some other socially acceptable role model. Secondly, attractive images of the victim are circulated throughout headlines. What sickened me most about the coverage of Laci Peterson was that the shot of her cute dimple-faced smile was published repeatedly even though her head wasn't even attached to her body anymore. I'm sorry, but this is exploitation, not sympathy. If the media only values sexually appealing, well-behaved females, then is their reporting trend executed out of respect and sorrow, or out of a desire to objectify women and keep them in their place?

COMPARED TO MEN...
The focus on pretty white girls doesn't just exclude the majority of real female victims, but also the majority of male victims. Violent crime reporting in general reflects the urge to promote traditional gender roles - females as complacent, passive victims and males as aggressive perpetrators. The only major coverage on the assault or murder of a man occurs when the assailant is a woman. Because the context of women supposedly being well-behaved has already been established, a case like this will seem especially sensational and unique.

This ideology is shared by our justice system. Women are now being imprisoned at a much faster rate than men, and their crimes - like the ones of their male counterparts - are often drug-related. The sentences they serve are often longer and harsher for the exact same offenses. Why is this? Take any judge or prosecutor or juror who believes women are supposed to be nurturing, gentle mothers and caregivers, and present them with a woman charged of drugs or violence, and how do you think they'll react? In essence, when men commit assault or abuse their children, it is natural and acceptable compared to when women do it, and American courts are acting accordingly.

Here are the rules for submission to Aspiring Film Makers. Failing to follow them will get your post deleted an kick/banned from Aspiring Film Makers.

1. Post Submissions in there own respective category. If you need assistance with something specific like a ride to an event, or people to help you on your film, post in the "Request" section. If you want to sell something, that goes it the "Listing" Section. Invitations or adverts to things such as film festivals go in the "Events" section, ect. Posting anything other that questions, responses, ideas or links/resources relating to production for film in the Main "Topics" section will get your post deleted and a kick/ban from Aspiring Film Makers, no exceptions.

2. If you want to post an image please keep it in the spirit of working towards film making. So a production photo showing someone working in a production environment is more appropriate than say, a head shot of you with your name and website included in the image in attempt to show your self off.

3. Your topic must be clear and concise. "???" for your topic is bad. "What's the best editing program for the PC" is Good. DON'T USE CAPS UNLESS YOU HAVE A GOOD REASON TO DO SO. If you don't have a clear and concise topic, I will email you and ask you or try to help you come with with a good topic and ask you to resubmit the post.

4. Don't promote your tribe here unless you have a specific reason to do so and you are a regular here. appropriate plugs happen when you are given a reason to talk about it in a discussion. If you join this tribe just to promote your tribe, the post will be deleted and you will be kicked/banned from Aspiring Film Makers, no exceptions. Have some class, you don't walk around plugging something in the real world with out a proper Etiquette. if you do walk around plugging your famous work arbitrarily please seek help.

The film is set in 1947, so while I'm not being a nazi for historical accuracy, I can't use uber-modern places. The mood I'm going for is sleazy run down dive -- a local watering hole, not a high class place. The action follows someone as they come in through the front door, walk directly to the bar, take a stool and order a drink, and have a conversation with the bartender and another patron.

*Pool table a big plus

I don’t have experience in Pro tools.

I hope to start in September, as I am busy putting a fashion show together for B-man. I would like to interview people from the bay area, but I also fancy taking a trip to NY for a few days to interview people there, (I have someone I/we can stay with). I want to interview as many people as I/we can, then use only the best of the best. I digress, if someone wants a fall/winter project shoot me an email. I want to take this seriously, but have fun, and would like to get it into an indie film festival.

The City of Gloom is a place where the sun doesn’t exist, the rain never stops, and the people are so complacent that they refuse to do anything to change their situations. Max is a man who has never been content in his world. One day he can no longer hide his discontentment and he begins having problems with his wife, Glumda. When Glumda goes to bed in the evening, Max goes for a walk. While walking, Max meets an odd captain who has seen the sun and gives Max a postcard as proof. Max then makes the decision go with the captain, leaving the City of Gloom. Before Glumda leaves in the morning Max makes one final plea to her in the form of a kiss. She is discussed by her husband’s new and very odd behavior and leaves the house without an argument. With his things packed in a suitcase, before leaving the house, Max drops a letter and the postcard on the table for his wife to find. He leaves with the Captain and though he never returns to the City again, he sends his wife postcards as a reminder that the sun exists in world, if she would only choose to search for it.

I'm a total novice in the whole film making industry, and I need some opinions on which camera I should invest in.

First off, I'm thinking panasonic is a good brand. I've heard that they're pretty good quality and a bargain of a price too boot! So, I've narrowed my search down to two cameras, the AG-DVC 30 and it's more expensive sibling the AG-DVX 100B. I've also considered the sony version of the AG-DVX 100, I think it's called HR1 something, I read somewhere that the panasonic was better and cheaper so I didn't presue it. Maybe you can change my mind, anyone whose tried the both of them.

Anyways, I would love to hear anyones opinion on which, if any, I should choose. I'm open to other sugestions, but my budget is 3000.00 Canadian, maybe a little over because I know the DVX-100 B is a little over 3000 smackers.

Even though I'm a total begginner whose starting film school in Sept.06, I am slightly specific in what I need and am looking for in a camera. I'm a fast learner, so don't feel shy to suggest something that might take some time to figure out.

Ok, here it goes. I need a camera thats going to give me a film quality edge. I love the idea of having 24 frame quality to play with!! It can't weigh more than 5 pounds (in other words, has to be a hand held) and must be able to take a pretty decent night shot. Also because I might be moving around a lot with the camera, automatic stabilization is important. Sound quality is important too, but I don't mind buying extra features later on to improve that if I have to (but if I didn't have to, that would be great!) One last thing, the zoom has to be very co-operative (ie:good manual control and automatic focus), as well as preferably a 20x optical zoom.

I think I have some pretty generic demands, but every camera I've read up on seems to lack in one of my requirements. I thought "what the hell, maybe you guys are on to something I'm not, that wouldn't be too far fetched considering I am an ameteur!" I appreciate your help and hope someone out there can help me make the right choice.

L8er! Zaim.

Mine are
LOTR: totally rocked, story line, CG. Alot of interesting metaphors about the nature of evil and how it effects all of us.
Martix 1: basicly I thought this film stood out as one that really had a great sense of style, plus it touched on some great spirtual ideas.
American Beauty: This movie is by far the most interesting film I have ever seen, its about real life in a urban society.

For more information contact: pete@galaxie-pictures.com

SYNOPSIS:

Teenage Sherri, a new arrival to Lake Charles, Louisiana, gets a rude awakening as the locals give her a slice of real Southern hospitality, small town style. Included in her Lake Charles initiation are some hard lessons on friendship, family, and bigotry—not the kind made of ephemeral remarks and incidental ostracizing of outsiders, but real and vicious institutional racism, the kind that ends in murder.

Sherri arrives as the locals prepare for the funeral of Mary, the town’s Contraband Days Celebration Queen. With her death begins the shattering of the perfect picture of southern hospitality that she represents. Grieving is glossed over in favor of panic about the town’s quickly evaporating marijuana supply. What’s really died is the smiling welcoming south, and its warmth and hospitality are quickly replaced by a rapid growth of weeds.

Then the ensemble cast of Unfiltered gradually unwinds into a hard picture of gritty southern life as facades of tolerance gradually peel / crumble away. What’s revealed is the stuff that’s usually swept under the carpet.

just joined here today. i'm a 34 yo visual artist, not into film making myself but i have a 10 year old son that is VERY interested in film making.

I found this out because i gave him an old digi camera that a friend gave to me. Some how he figured out that he could make 30 second to 1 minute films with it and boy did he have a ball. he would have his two younger brothers pose battle scenes... he has filmed me frolicking in the flowers...a lot of fun. It is great to see that he has a passion for this and has told me he is very interested in making films.

So about all I know about "starting" with directing making films is that you have to use "story boards" i know this from the special features on some DVD.

I was wondering if any of you kind people can direct me to resources that can help me fuel his interest. Yes i do have dreams of the three of them starting a production company one day!!

I want him to have something that explains the ins and outs and why story boarding is important and so on.

any help would be appreciated.

There is a good community college nearby with an impressive film department. They actually have festivals every year or so... I think. I was thinking that maybe I could do something there, but I'm hell bent on attending the university.

I'd really just like to know how to get involved in film. Does anyone know of any clubs or organizations? What can I do in college? I'm going to the University of Tennessee.

We are currently accepting submissions of films 30 minutes and under (though we'll watch and might even show, anything under an hour if it's good enough) Science Fiction will be broadly defined as anything tech-themed or with serious elements of fantasy in the modern world. We'd also like to show a couple of tech-themed docs as a sort of cinematic sorbet.

There is no submission fee. We can only show DVD, so we'd prefer DVD for review (which will also save a filmmaker from having the ship a presentation copy later)

http://www.deathofcain.com

there's also a new forum there. I think I'd actually like to hear what people have to say about it. I warn you, though: It's 46 minutes, without dialogue, presenting a twisted adaptation of the Biblical tale of Cain and Abel - and has sheep in it (they're actually quite good, the sheep).

Basically, it all spun from two verses which leaped out to me from the original text: One is what God says to Eve, in Genesis 3 - "in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee". The second is what God says to Cain, in Genesis 4 - "sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him". If you take these two verses and compare them, you get a strange equation: God said to woman that her desire is for man and he shall rule over her - God said to man sin will desire him and he shall rule over sin. This kind puts woman and sin together, no? And if you compare the beginning of the verses - the act of sin is the act of bringing children, the act of Godliness taken away from God by Man. So that's where it all started.

Hey just wanted to throw this out there for ideas and if its already been done, Also Id like to see if anyone else is interested in doing a production like this. I went on a trip to Europe last year, first time out of the country so I didn't really have any concrete plans about what I wanted to film, but after being back for a year I realized that maybe talking about the act of traveling on your own might be a interesting documentary idea. Motor Cycle dairies, kind of did it, but I would like to focus on the culture of backpacking.

From a backpacker’s point of view, traveling under the radar of tourism with backpackers that never left the country to see how culture, history and traveling from place to place changes them. Id like to document the ins and outs of travelers getting around all by them self’s, learning the language and culture of specific countries, talking/meeting with the locals and other travelers; and the adventure of finding secret travel spots. Also Id like to focus on hostel interactions, how easily people that never knew each other before, get together to form lasting friendships, how some form traveling groups to share in the experience of visiting a new place. I would like to specifically document the changes in there personality, how they handled challenges of getting around, communicating with locals, and how traveling the unknown affected their decisions in life, during and after the trip, and what they plan on doing in the future because of what happened to them on there trip.

Any comments, ideas, or suggestions would be appreciated.

I Just got back from Collateral. I thought the movie did a very good job of bringing out into the open the notion of how little time we have on this earth and to make the best of it.

I thought it was interesting how similar the two characters Max and Vincent were regarding the lives they have chosen for themselves, and how alone they both seemed. In the Hospital with Max’s Mother she mentions that you have to hold a gun to Max’s head for him to actually do anything. Vincent the hired killer takes a position of apathy during the last act when he argues with max about how events seem more like equations and mathematical probabilities. He seemed bitter that life isn’t more than that when he hammered Max on why he has been a cab driver for 12 years, making no real attempts to make something happen with his limo business.

Finally Max is forced to make choices he would have never made on his own. Crashing his Cab and then going after Vincent to protect the women.

At the end when they are both facing each other on the train, while Vincent is dying, max says "We're all most at the next stop”, I think Vincent Replies, "I wonder if anyone will notice a dead man on the train?”

After that scene I remember distinctively feeling a strong sense of determination to not let life pass me by because I am too concerned about what people think about my actions.
“We’re almost at the next stop” to me means, death is just around the corner, use your time wisely.

I remember in the cab Vincent mentioned that he hated the idea that a dead man had ridden a train for hours without anybody noticing. I kind of feel that way around most people in this area as well. Not too many people care what happens to people outside there immediate sphere of influence.. It’s a real tragedy if you ask me.
